Bridging the Divide - A First Step
On Saturday, February 22nd at the Mount Horeb Community Center, about 20 or so people from the left and right gathered to start what we hope will become a broader and deeper discussion about the divisive politics that threaten to tear the country apart.
Obviously no game-changing insights came out of the meeting, but there were areas of agreement that can be developed further. For example, an agreement that our current media ecosystem is driving us further apart and is indeed incentivized to so. There was also agreement that critical thinking skills among the population have been diminished and that their revitalization in the school curriculum is an urgent need. To wit, in a 2018 study, Pew Research found that only 26% of Americans could correctly distinguish fact from opinion across a series of statements.
